I remember reading somewhere that the secret to success as in independent artist was your day job. Makes sense. The secret to ANY success is your day job, really ANY job. ANY job could possibly lead to ANY success at all - big or small.
So MY day job, since you're wondering, is working at The Omni Hotel as a professional bellman on Amelia Island, Florida. I've been in this position for going on 13 years now and I love what I do. I love where I work and who I work with. Sounds pretty sickening, doesn't it? You're proably thinking, NOBODY loves what they do! And at the VERY least they definitely DON'T love who they work WITH!! But, I can assure you, it's true. Believe it or not.
The reason I bring this up is because at the moment (maybe you've heard about this) our property is undergoing a massive, $90 million "re-imagination". Which means we're building a new hotel, new pool, new bar, new restaurants, new conference center, new EVERYTHING! And not just NEW, but INCREDIBLY AWESOME as well.
So, while the renovations have been taking place, I've had a good bit of time off handed to me. Which I enjoy almost as much I do working. So much time off in fact I was able to take the entire month of January to myself. And during those last few days of December, when I knew what lie ahead, I was convinced I'd write and record a new song. But I didn't. I came close; I picked up my guitars and plugged into my Tascam DP008 eight-track recorded but to no real avail. I strummed a few chords and messed with some layering some melodies but it was a lost cause.
Now, this isn't to mean that I'm hanging it up or throwing in the towel or giving up on rock and roll.
It just means that, for the first time in my life, I actually took time OFF. I relaxed, I fixed a few things around the house, I made a LOT of great dinners - I took time for ME. And if you're ever faced with an exceptionally large amount of time off, IF you can stomach it (because it's not for everyone) do whatever it is that YOU want to do. And then when you get back to work you'll have a new found appreciation for what you're doing and what you're doing it O
