I can still remember the day that TW Walsh really blew my mind.
I was probably 24 or 26 and I was living in a two bedroom apartment that I was renting with my good friend Kris. He and I would each fluctuate between being fairly poor and moderately stable from week to week. We lived a block from the ocean. Our house was on stilts so the bottom floor was a carport which we turned into a pretty comfortable, pretty awesome outdoor living area complete with a couch, a table and chairs, an extremely heavy bar (which Kris and I bought from a neighbor two blocks up the road and pushed all the way home), at least one tv (there were two at one point) a few refrigerators, Christmas lights, stereos, grills and a fuse ball table.
Needless to say, we had a fair amount of company. I met my wife there. She was staying with a friend who had a beach house up the road and one day all her friends and all my friends bumped into each other on the beach. They all came over to our carport that evening and we hit it off. Our friends would come over and play fuse ball into the wee hours of the night. The police were called on a few occasions because our games would get so spirited and loud. I set my old Nintendo Entertainment System up on one of the televisions and for the first time in my life, after a childhood of trying, I BEAT Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Unfortunately I was alone, so nobody witnessed it, but I can assure you: it happened in that carport that night. We'd set-up our rock-gear and have countless jam sessions. My buddy Greg and I set up our gear one day and concluded that what we were doing could only get more and more awesome as the day went on. Sure enough, a unfamiliar kid with curly hair, a full sleeve of tattoos and nothing but board-shorts kept skating by the house. After a few times he came over and we all introduced ourselves. Turned out he lived two houses down and could play guitar like a madman. He came over, we jammed and he blew us away with his skills. To this day he is still a very close friend of all of ours.
There are countless other memories that were made in that carport on Askins avenue but this essay isn't about that - perhaps I'll tell more about the carport another day - this essay is about TW Walsh. And the first song of his that really blew me away was "I Need A New Drug". I had been a fan of The Soft Drugs (his previous band) for a few years at this point but THIS was his first truly incredible, solo piece. I listened to it all day and you better believe we listened to it that night in the carport. That song kills and it STILL kills.
Now he's just released a new track which I've featured below. I'll say very little else other than it's rad and you should listen to it and learn about the guy if you don't know much about him. He's a humble rock and roller with a very interesting story.
Enjoy...
